Magasinparken Secondary School, Ski | Norway

In the Norwegian town of Ski, southeast of Oslo, a pioneering three-story school building has been constructed. The project was realized using binderholz CLT BBS, binderholz glulam and binderholz solid wood panels. In addition to supplying the solid wood components, including all associated fasteners and connectors, our b_project team also handled the planning works and structural timber engineering. A special highlight is the supplied bridge made of glulam, solid wood for construction KVH® and steel, which was precisely prefabricated 'off-site' in our plants.

FACTS

Project New construction of a school building with a solid wood bridge
Location Ski, Norway
Completion 2025
Architecture Arkitema
Construction company Hent AS
Structural timber engineering binderholz
Stored carbon (C) during use phase 2010 t CO2-Eq
Material use 2,180 m³ binderholz CLT BBS, 445 m³ binderholz glulam, 100 m² binderholz solid wood panels, binderholz solid wood for construction KVH®

The school building is located a 10-minute walk from the local train station, which also features CLT BBS roof structures from binderholz. Thanks to the high degree of prefabrication of the mass timber elements, the entire timber construction was completed in just 5 months, within a total construction period of only 18 months.

A Building for the Future

Magasinparken Secondary School was designed with a strong focus on sustainability and high architectural quality. Spanning an area of 7,960 m², the building accommodates 800 students. As a BREEAM Excellent certified project and a pilot project for FutureBuilt ZERO-L (greenhouse gas calculation for landscapes), the school sets new standards. This nearly zero-energy building achieves an impressive 50 percent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to conventional construction methods.

The load-bearing structure consists largely of mass timber, which also creates a warm atmosphere indoors. Wooden facades, solar panels on the roof and geothermal heat pumps complement the ecological concept.

The educational facility is far more than just a school, it is a vibrant meeting point for the entire region. At the heart of the complex is an open neighborhood park with a versatile schoolyard that offers space for all age groups. A multipurpose hall, cultural facilities and modern outdoor sports fields promote local community cohesion. A particular highlight is the tunnel slide leading directly from the roof to the ground, which has already become a popular local attraction. For relaxation, the exclusive roof terrace is equipped with an outdoor kitchen and sun loungers and remains partially open to the public even outside of school hours.

Magasinparken Secondary School combines sustainable timber construction with modern design, creating true added value for the entire region.
