The new, four-story Brookhaven City Centre was built on a gross floor area of 5,400 m². A total of 880 m³ of binderholz CLT BBS, 415 m³ of binderholz glulam and 14 m³ of binderholz solid wood panels were used. As the first municipal mass timber building in the state of Georgia, the city hall impresses with its timber construction, which is largely visible in the interior. The building includes modern offices, community and multi-purpose rooms, a council chamber for up to 100 people, the Brookhaven Chamber of Commerce and a rooftop garden.

The striking features of the building with its characteristic dome include a three-story atrium with a skylight, a fitness room, a catering kitchen, a café and rentable meeting rooms. Located north of Atlanta, the city hall is an important milestone for the 60,000-resident city of Brookhaven. It sets a signal for the national trend towards sustainable development, as wood convinces through durability, carbon sequestration and minimized construction waste. The project is aiming for WELL Gold and LEED certification. Due to the mass timber construction method, the CO₂ footprint was significantly reduced compared to conventional concrete or steel buildings.

"The project's use of mass timber - the first for a city building in Georgia - demonstrates our commitment to sustainable and efficient construction practices, allowing for a faster build and a smaller environmental footprint," said Rob Schulten of the Barnsley Construction Group.

Timber construction implemented efficiently

The largely visible timber construction in the interior ensures a natural aesthetic and a healthy indoor climate. In the construction phase, the close coordination between binderholz and the general contractor McCarthy + Barnsley, A Joint Venture, was particularly decisive. Thanks to precise prefabrication and 'just-in-time' delivery of the mass timber elements, the construction site could be used efficiently and the assembly time optimized. The pure timber construction took only two and a half months of the total 22-month construction period.

While binderholz CLT BBS was used for the wall, ceiling and roof constructions, glulam elements were used as columns and beams in the spacious atrium and solid wood panels were used in the high-quality interior finishing.

Our binderholz b_project team carried out the structural connection design, planning works, prefabrication and delivery of all solid wood components as well as the associated fasteners and connectors, the installation of the complete solid timber superstructure and building site supervision.

The timber construction project combines traditional architecture with forward-looking ecology and highly efficient construction.
